FIGURES HE'S ON THE COVER...

Butt23 Cover.jpg

Recently, I received the latest issue of BUTT Magazine (#23) in the mail. On the cover is a disgusting picture of Slava Mogutin, who performed in three of my films under the name Tom International. The Butt magazine cover shows Slava’s finger probing his nose in search of boogers. But I’m not writing this blog entry because of that ugly picture. I’m writing because of the way Mogutin refers to me in the article. When asked how he wound up in my Fire Island Cruising videos, he says:

“Well, Michael Lucas lived around the corner from me and he would always be bothering me to appear in his movies.”

Truth to tell, Slava Mogutin and I were quite close friends. But I ended that friendship after realizing that Slava is probably the most selfish, self-centered person I’ve ever met. Not that I make friends in order to be able to rely on them in a difficult moment. I make friends to share moments of happiness and to have a good time.

I met Slava in the winter of 1997. I had just moved to New York. He had received asylum in the U.S. about one year before that. The asylum status had been arranged for him by Robert, his American boyfriend of many years standing. I probably shouldn’t be complaining, because Robert, just like me, is referred to as “this guy,” in the Butt article. Robert was wonderful to Slava. He got him his American residency, staying by Slava’s side through all the difficulties he experienced in Soviet Russia. Robert was paying Slava’s living expenses and also paying for the production and distribution of his “art.” Mainly, that “art” was cheesy and narcissistic autobiographical novels. So I guess I have no right to complain, given that Robert dedicated part of his life to Slava, while I was just a good friend who was always happy to help.

Robert was disposed of shortly after I met Slava, and had found him an apartment in the same building where I lived, something I never derived any pleasure from, and did mostly as a friend, since Mogutin was a lousy performer, who could never keep a hard on. He always demanded to be a top, but always ended up bottoming. He had no energy and was quiet, as if he were knitting something instead of fucking. Yet, his hustler business thrived after he appeared in my movies. So no, I did not bother Slava to be in my films. It was the other way around. I also lent money to my "friend" countless times. But I got a firm no when asked for a return favor. In fact, he said, "Yes, Michael, you've lent me money many times, but that doesn't mean I have to lend you money."

I ended our relationship when I was leaving for a performance in Florida and asked Slava to take my dog for a walk, which he told me he absolutely could not do, since he was incredibly busy that day. I didn't need a friend who doesn't have fifteen minutes for me when I need them most. I’ll add that I was also bothered by Slava’s soft spot for Nazis and their uniforms.

At the same time, I do realize why I was friends with Slava. He has a great sense of humor, which I always appreciate. He can be interesting, and he's definitely creative. We both left Soviet Russia for Capitalist America, and we both fell in love with New York. But the way he was going through life, disposing of people after he was through with them, was simply too much to witness.

That’s what “this guy” Michael Lucas has to say for the Russian "artist" Slava Mogutin.

I heard that the editors of Butt magazine bothered Slava to pose with his finger on a boogers hunt.

The good news would be that booger harvesting is a green activity.
