HX column: A Change Will Do You Good

I had a problem with Buck Angel. I admit it. A “human tragedy” is what I called him back in 2005. An “ugly, bald, chubby man.” How could any self-respecting gay man possibly get turned on by this female-to-male transsexual porn star? By this vagina?

It took a simple conversation to change my mind. Buck himself dropped by my office a couple weeks ago, HBO documentary crew in tow, to sit down and talk to me about his life. He told me that there’s a community of FTM men, like himself, who haven’t completed their transitions and still have their vaginas intact. Surrogate penises nowadays, apparently, are just too ugly, dysfunctional and expensive to have—surgery can cost up to $100,000.

I asked Buck how many men he meets in bars brush him off after he tells them that he still has a vagina. Buck said that he knows his market better than that and the kinds of people he should approach, so that situation rarely happens. What is your market? I asked. The extreme crowd who is into kink, he said. There is an entire community of kink lovers—including many who identify as gay men—who are way into un-transitioned FTM men.

Sexuality, it turns out, is more fluid than I thought it was. My own sexuality happens not to be—dick, balls and ass forever! Well a little more than that if you’ve ever watched my films. But for some people, it can truly be fluid. I wasn’t aware that there is an entire community of guys like Buck and guys who like guys like Buck.

My company is now the official gay distributor of “Buckback Mountain,” the first movie from Buck Angel Entertainment. Shameless plug, I know. But guess what? The movie sells and the guys buying it tend to be the customers who buy the director’s cut versions of my films—those that feature watersports and fisting scenes that retail stores shy away from. My customers, who I used to think were only into only cock, are dabbling in pussy!

I thought I knew everything there was to know about male sexuality. But I didn’t. I was confused before, yes, but now I feel I understand it. Like Buck, I’m a changed man.

There's a German expression:

Jedem Tierchen sein eigenes Plaisierchen -

To each little animal, its own little pleasure.

I reviewed "Buckback Mountain" for an online video site and I must say that "I enjoyed it." I had to get my mind into a certain frame, but I eventually equalized. There are many gay men who actually buy/rent straight porn.

Personally, I know many who PREFER hetero smut to the gay material. I think it's all about the type of men in those films, mixed with personal fantasies about having sex with str8 guys.

When a gay man watches straight porn, he usually identifies with the female whore. His fantasy is that HE is that woman on the screen getting fucked half to death.

I've heard from many guys who felt at one time or another during their life, that they wanted to BE female and had also fantasized about having a sex change! Well, a variety of things go through people's minds AND no, they are NOT crazy, just curious.

After watching Buck Angel's film, my imagination went wild. If half of gay men were born with vaginas, it would change the world as we know it. I don't have the time to go through the whole scenario, but THINK about it. What if in utero, male embryos, who will lean towards bottoming were born with vaginas; grow up as self-identified males like Buck or straight-acting gay men (including the effeminate), can you imagine how str8 men would react to that segment of the gay populous? If those gay men (w/vaginas) had the same mindset regarding sex as most men (gay or hetero), the female "no" factor could all but be eradicated from the dating scene as str8 men now know it.

Most gay men I know fuck on the first date and most women won't. If they could, most hetero men would too, but usually they must deal with the "no" factor. During my years (in this gay business) I, along with zillions of other gay men, thought that a first date without sex was a failure!

Just think, str8 men, who deep down inside, really don't LIKE women as people, but like having sex with the them, could eliminate what they mostly dislike about females (too much talk, wanting gifts, compliments, MONEY, at least six dates before sex, other female rules & regulations, etc.) and have a debauched sex life featuring gay men with pussies! Afterwards, they could talk about football and other man-stuff. Think about it.

That was only a fantasy, but in a way, it's one that Buck Angel can actually live out.

While I am personally turned off by a man with a vagina, I respect people for who and what they are. Buck is pretty much a prime example of the natural evolution of things. Everything changes and we will ALWAYS see things we have never seen before. The only thing that seems to fail in keeping up with the evolutionary scale is the human mind. At least in most cases. Take George W. Bush for example.

Just for the record here:

Hemingway's novel The Garden of Eden has passages where male and female characters in sexual situations imagine themselves to be changing their genders.

Scribner published it decades after Hemingway's death, and only included a small portion of the entire manuscript, so only scholars who have seen that know how deeply Hemingway delved into this realm.

It is being adapted into a film directed by John Irvin, and Screen International is calling it a "boundaries-breaking erotic drama." Mena Suvari and John Huston will star.

I hate to admit this but I was trying to come up with a "Chicks with Dicks" type phrase to describe this kind of thing.

All I could think of was "Wussies with Pussies."

Can anybody else do any better?
