One Republican, One Transexual, Pornstars, and GLAAD

I recently read this in Michael Musto's La Dolce Musto (thank you Mr. Musto for writing about it).

Before she went for those latest injections, Amanda Lepore may have gotten some needling of a different sort. An insider source says that when DAVID LACHAPELLE couldn't make it to the GLAAD awards to pick up a special honor, his first request was to have his muse Lepore accept on his behalf. His people were supposedly told by GLAAD that Logo (or it's parent company, VH1), which was filming the ceremony, didn't want her. When Heatherette's RICHIE RICH and TRAVER RAINS became the acceptors, they—says the source—asked to bring Amanda along onstage and were also told not to!

Transophobia? It would seem weird for the network that's featured Lepore in a news report and aired the series Transgeneration (plus CANDIS CAYNE was the award show's trophy girl.) I asked a GLAAD rep about all this, and he responded that after LaChapelle had to cancel, "we were told that PETRA NEMCOVA would be introducing the award and that Richie and Traver were going to accept on his behalf. Amanda walked the red carpet, was seated at the event; and was recognized from the stage as part of the acceptance from David [read by Rich and Rains]." She certainly was. I just hope she—and her vagina—weren't forced into silence mode.

This is so not a surprise.

GLAAD is the most hypocritical organization. They are supposed to represent us properly in the media, but they always fail, even at their awards show.

This is the most sterile group, absolutely not interested in highlighting our community, diverse as it is. They want to run around and lie to the world that the gay community is made up of middle-class, clean cut professionals with a bunch of lipstick lesbians thrown in. And of course, it's good when they are already accepted mainstream celebrities, even better, if they own some children purchased from ebay.

Neither Colton Ford nor myself nor Amanda Lepore are allowed on their high stage, because we are considered freaks to this organization. Sure, they will take our money at any time, as they did in the past. But I just refuse to attend because what the gay community is and what they are trying to portray is like night and day.

I embrace the reality of the gay community, not the conservative portrait of the ideal American gay that they have invented for the media. By the way, did I mention that the president of GLAAD is a Republican? Isn't that ridiculous! The whole to-do reminds me of the Stepford Wives when they were trying to deprogram the gay man.

I don't think that straight people are buying what they are selling, and I don't think straight people need this made-up idea of what a gay man is. The world should strive to embrace us as diverse as we are. Always remember that those who do not blend in or look like others are the most attacked and in the most need of defense. The Wall-street guys in their designer suits at the GLAAD shows are not the ones in the greatest danger.

See the earlier blogpost "Hi Mister Lucas, we are ashamed of you. Now can ya give us some money?"

And worse still, Neil Giuliano was all about the red-carpet photo-op with Amanda while both were there.

I am so sick of GLAAD and HRC (who now feel it's their obligation to be GLAAD-lite). It's only recently that HRC has decided that Trans issues are part of their concern.

Tell them all to shove it somewhere, I say.

Not only is it ridiculous that the president of GLAAD is a Republican, but given "Shock and Awe," Abu Grhaib, the mishandling of the Katrina emergency, the Dubai Ports World deal and that oh so little matter of the 8 trillion dollar national debt, it's ridiculous that ANYBODY is a republican.

Long live Amanda Lepore!

Winning a GLAAD award is a joke. Haven't they run out of publicity-hungry straight celebs YET? How many awards does Will & Grace really need to win from this group? Even straight audiences have forgotten this show is still on the air. I pass on attending this show every year--our gay dollars are better spent elsewhere in the community. When Lucas Entertainment is honored for it's safe sex policy, I'll gladly show up. this "organization" exists in a world all of its own design--about as real as the land of Oz but not nearly as fun or as gay.

Had a recent traning with our region's GLAAD Rep. It was good for local red state folk like myself to take a refesher course on staying on point during an interview. The strange part was the young man who has been hired to represent our region sez he's str8 ~ yet Uncle Z's gaydar [45 yrs and counting] was off the map about this young man's assertion. So Uncle Z thinks we have an in the closet representative hired by GLAAD to train and maintain a red state region. Oy!

Prince Effexor and I have recently joined the NAACP; which a week later made it public that they are against the "Family Discrimination Amendment" going before our state in November. That was HUGE! The state is South Carolina fer Christ's sake!

Another bright spot was the Immigration Rally this past Monday, over 4,000 people waving American, Mexican, Brazilian and French flags ~ we're talkin' Charleston, SC!

We are now in the winds of change. The Prince and I have stepped back from focusing on GLBT orgs and joined in with other groups that get it: the oldest reformed Jewish congregation in the country the KKBE ~ Rally tuesday the 25th ~ have made an open statement that this year they would honor "all" those lost in death camps. Their Sisterhood hosted a lunch to view our "Fairness For All Families" video and hold a wonderfully open conversation about Equal Rights - 50 more votes!

We've activated our neighborhood association by posting a "manifesto" stating that if we heard and/or saw any child being terrorized by an adult or teenager we would contact the police (see my blof for details.) Our neighborhood greeted us at an Easter Egg hunt, in our local park, with thanks and commitments to make our little village better ~ We calculate that we have just gained about 100 more votes against the proposed "Family Discrimination Amendment."

Take notice of my use of the phrase "Family Discrimination Amendment" ~ girlfriends we have renamed the "Gay Marriage" debate. Henceforth we will strike "Gay Marriage Amendment" from our vocabularies and replace it with "Family Discrimination Amendment." We have been test running this in South Carolina and it works!

Sorry for the rant: One more thing; I have had the opportunity to ask the head of the HRC & our local GLAAD rep why Linda Ketner, a local human rights supporter, has not recieved any national awards for her efforts and $$$$$. This woman donated $1 to $1 a recent fund raisng campaign by the SC Equality Coalition; by the end of the campaign we had $145,000 in our war chest ~ Miz Ketner was responsible for putting her money where her mouth is like no one I have seen in the GLBT community.

Michael keep up the good rants!

peace,
Uncle Z

Send a donation to the SC Equality Coalition ~ get our video and have a "House Party" for us in NYC with all your well healed and pissed off fellow doners. Web Site for more info:

We're off to a committee meeting for the 2006 World AIDS rally down here.

Michael,

I just read, somewhere on the internet, that LOGO has refused the ads for the church which show a gay couple being turned away @ an evangelical church. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD A GAY TV STATION TURN DOWN THESE ADS? The world is CRAZY!

Posted by: Russ at April 12, 2006 11:53 AM

LOGO refused the ad as a matter of corporate policy, because LOGO is a subsidiary of Viacom, and Viacom refused the ad on behalf of CBS, UPN, MTV, VH1, and all its other networks. An unfortunate side effect, alas.

Also LOGO is a joke... even when they air a good program it's cut up and bleeped as if on the ABC Family channel! I'd rather be viwing the pro-gay stuff on HBO!
