John Paulus' First Scene With Lucas Entertainment
When John Paulus contacted me, I had no idea who he was. When John explained that he wanted to film a movie with me, I was going to direct him to casting. I am possibly the only gay man in the world who didn't even know who Clay Aiken is, aside from Lady Bunny's joke. I also do not follow the gossip columns. When he called, I didn't have much time to get into the story, so I told him I would call him back after doing some research. In the meantime I asked him to send me some pictures directly to my email address. It was easy to find information on him, as he is all over the internet. Most of my fellow bloggers were talking about him. Most of the comments humiliated him and made him sound like a gold digger.
I received his pictures. I thought the guy was hot. I called him back and we talked for about 2 hours. Look, I have been in show-business for a few years now, and I think I can trust my instincts. The guy seemed honest and sincere. He was also scared, confused, and not very articulate. At the same time, he was not some kind of stupid bimbo. He told me about the troubles he having: death threats, eviction, and losing his job. He told me he was coming to New York the next night to appear on the Howard Stern Show. I asked him to change the ticket for an earlier flight and come straight to my office.
The first thing I did was a one hour long interview with him, which we recorded for www.LucasEntertainment.com. The interview was revealing, and this part will be available for Lucas Entertainment members only, starting later today.
I read lots of blogs and articles, and I want to address the most frequent comments, which boil down to this:
Did I sign him as an exclusive model to make money?
Did I want to capitalize on his 15 minutes of fame?
The answer to both is Yes.
This should not come as a surprise. You see, I am in the business of show-business. I am always looking for sexually active, good looking men, who will make money for Lucas Entertainment and themselves. Once I find them, I start to promote them heavily. So when I found this good looking guy who already had a story and buzz around him, I made sure to sign him, and I signed him immediately. If that was not my intention, then I would not have such a successful company. That's just the nature of this business. It's called publicity and that's what fuels entertainment and media.
Did John expose Clay to make money? Is he a greedy sleazebag?
The answer to this is No.
You can judge for yourself from his interview. The important thing here is that John was offered lots of money from tabloids and he refused it. Money never exchanged hands. (Feel free to verify this with the Enquirer and other magazines) I don't think him not taking the money was the right choice considering that the guy is broke and lost his job. He is a man who wants to earn money by working, and that is why he contacted me. The fact that he never received money from the magazines is something that bloggers overlook.
John always wanted to do porn. From his interview, you will learn that he was stripping in clubs years ago and enjoyed it very much. He was offered to be in movies before, but could never accept, because first he was in the army, and then he had a real estate job in one of the most conservative parts of the country. Now that he's lost everything, he decided it was time to pursue his dream. What did he have to lose? Yesterday we filmed the scene with John Paulus. We filmed one solo scene, and a one on one with John and myself.
There was a lot of talk in the media about re-enacting his scene as it happened with Clay Aiken. I am not going to do such a cheesy and pathetic thing. What's to re-enact? The barebacking experience that left John so upset, he wasn't even aroused? That's not the kind of film that Lucas Entertainment would produce. I really don't think that a Clay Aiken lookalike would excite anyone.
All information for his interview and sex scene will be announced at www.LucasEntertainment.com today.

What I love about you is your frankness and "no apologies attitude." You have probably saved this young man's life.

Ok.. HOLD UP.. Who are we suppose to be painting as the victim here? Many of the people who have responded to this blog and even Micheal Lucas himself have drawn a picture of John Paulus as a victim. I don't think that is an accurate protrayal and here are the numerous holes in his story that lead me to think that way:
-I love how John equates manhunt.net to eharmony and match.com.
-Why would you get a hotel if you didn't have intentions of having sex? Why not just meet in a bar? You could compromise and meet in the hotel bar.
-John had to take a shower but he wasn't going to have sex?
-John talks as if he was forced to have sex with Clay Aiken (Clay 'forced' Johns hand on his crotch? Clay 'forced' his dick in John's ass? Clay forced John to have unprotected anal sex for 60 minutes?) .. I'm sorry but isn't that called 'rape'?
-90 minutes??? 90 minutes of sex and Clay Aiken is responsible??
-He BROUGHT a washcloth to a hotel?? why? The whole towel thing is just shady.
-If John saw him online again after the sex, he must have been online himself. Why is Clay Aiken demonized for this?
Until I hear the word rape and a trial following, I don't think John or Clay are better or worse people. Howard states that he has a problem with outing but yet he is contributing to this spectacle just as much if not more than anyone else including Micheal Lucas. This whole thing is a media spectacle which is fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned but lets be honest about what we're saying here. I respect Micheal for admitting his reasons for signing John but lets not paint a picture of a poor innocent victim here.

For the record, I can't stand Clay Aiken, but I tend to agree with Scott LaForce on this matter.
Posted by: Lee at February 10, 2006 06:05 PM
If anything this is a consenting act. I'm sorry I cannot believe a damn ex Green Beret couldn't fight off Clay Aiken. Clay is a tall guy but he isn't muscular at all.

Why is everybody acting as though it were necessary to choose sides between Clay Aiken and John Paulus?
Human beings have human failings. We aren't exactly talking about Hitler vs. Churchill here.
Isn't it just possible that neither Clay nor John are completely wrong or completely right? When's the last time any of the people critizing John for taking advantage of this media moment worked in real estate in the homophobic boonies? Do they have any idea what it's like telling card-carrying members of one of those throwback organizations with "family" in its name that the eating nook in the kitchen gets indirect sunlight four hours every day? Do they have any idea what it's like to live more than three miles from the Ermenegildo Zegna boutique on Fifth Avenue?
This is neither the first nor the last time somebody took advantage of their notoriety to launch a professional porn adventure. The first thing John Wayne Bobbit did when they reattached his dick was to appear in "Frankenpenis."
Michael Lucas is shrewd to be including John in his productions, and shrewdness is not a vice. Which brings me to the one point on which it is AOK to choose between Clay and John: which would you rather sit through; a dopey Christmas album, or a steamy hot gay porn scene?
Posted by: Scott Rose at February 10, 2006 08:23 PM
I posted this as a comment to the other blog, but I think it probably fits better here. What I said was:
Here's what I don't understand and it is at the heart of this mess.
IF John Paulus and Clay Aiken engaged in 90 minutes of bareback, unprotected sex, how is John Paulus already filming anything?
I don't know about you, but I'd be a bit worried especially since Mr. Aiken is portrayed as such a sexual aggressor -- Paulus's account on Stern implies that Aiken was doing this a lot. So that makes me think that the story is not true and that you can't think it's true either -- because why would you expose anyone to that kind of risk?
In other words, if Paulus had unprotected sex that recently -- which is the part of the story everyone seems to be jumping on -- then he shouldn't be having sex with anyone for a while, even using protection.
As a side note, I don't buy his hints of coercion either -- not as a former Green Beret. He also claims he didn't even get an erection, Aiken was using him, etc., but then he still wanted a relationship and he's upset that Aiken didn't? It makes no sense. He's trying to use Aiken to launch a porn career. I don't know if anything happened or not, but it's not a political protest about barebacking or a statement on outing and hypocrisy. (I think it's wrong to out anyone before he's ready to out himself.)
It's all about Paulus and his own interests. But again -- I'm skeptical of the barebacking claim if you're filming sex scenes with this guy.

I can believe a good chunk of Paulus' tale. I can more easily go along with Michael's reasoning behind taking the lad on. It makes good sense.
Nonetheless - along the whole, winding trail of this scenario is the scent of opportunism. John's waving away tabloid offers by no means points to a high-minded, non-profiteeering attitude about his time with Aiken; it rather shows me that he simply wants to use it to the best advantage possible. Which translates to a career with Lucas. A tabloid gives you a check and, unless you're Britney, is very done with you. Smarter to go for the initially less lucrative, but ultimately more rewarding, long haul.
In other words, dude is a hustler. That doesn't mean he still isn't sincere, sweet, etc. It just means he's of the breed that keeps a calculator in the back pocket, always. And often the dumbest, nicest studs have this acute financial mechanism behind their sweet, appealing eyes.

I'm having difficulty with Clay Aiken on top of anybody. Or on the bottom for that matter. The visual leaves me without an erection...LOL. But seriously, until we as gay men get to the point in our thought process that a celebrity being gay isn't considered malicious gossip or vicious acqusation, we are as guilty as the right wingers who persecute us and deny us our civil rights. Clay would not be receiving the treatment John is getting if Clay were telling the same story in his own tell all book. The reality is, it's just as much John's story as it is Clay's and thusly John has the right to tell it.

It vexes me that, based on the word of one person, everyone is all a twitter about another person. I don't know either person, Clay Aiken or this John Paulus guy, but it seems to me that the community can use less 'outing' and more time taking care of ourselves and others. We have lost our sensitivity to our understanding of the process and the choice we should have to come out. A lot of guys are 'out' and had the, what is now, the luxury of doing it on their own. Celebrity does not bear the responsibility of owning up to your sexuality. If you're a singer, you sing, if you dance, you dance, if you're a porn stud, make porn but its not part and parcel for you to have to reveal yourself to everyone because they want to know.
Doesn’t fame come in many forms? There is big celebrity fame, fame in the work place, popularity in the neighborhood and still, one should have the “Right” to their sexuality without being “outed”. It seems that no one remembers what the repercussions can be or that there still are negative, even grave, consequences in many places for being gay. Who is anyone to put that burden on another person because of personal righteousness?
Shame on anyone who "outs" under the guise of trying to help the community or hypocrisy. Out the murderer, out the dictator, the terrorist and the child molester but someone’s sexuality? C'mon. If you have an agenda and want to leach off another, you gotta get a friggin' clue.
Michael, love your site and your work. You have been articulate and honest. Thanks for your blog.

I'm not going to take sides on this issue, but it looks like what happened was between two consenting adults. Surely if John didn't want to have sex (safe or not) with Clay, he could have walked away.
Posted by: Donald in Toronto at February 13, 2006 05:54 PM
Who cares if the sex was completely voluntary or a little coerced. The real story here is that John had gay sex with a celebrity who primarily makes his living portraying himself as an icon for women who identify themselves as religious conservatives. They hate gay men ( read some of the blogs on Clay's fan websites if you don't believe me) and they are the very voters who are helping to deliver those big majorities for outlawing gay marriage in lots of states. I'm all for takng advantage of every opportunity to point out to these folks that most of their icons are hypocrites and the "lifestyle" they espouse doesn't exist in real life. Maybe when they figure that out they'll stop trying to force that lifestyle on other people. I'm glad John has helped to out Clay and I'm glad Michael is giving the story some more life.
Posted by: tom at February 13, 2006 10:44 PM
I think it's great you signed him up however; I thought you were againist using models that had unprotected sex and clearly he was getting fucked by Clay raw? What gives..do you give up your morals for money Michael?
