Michael's Mailbox:

First, let me apologize to my readers for giving away the ending of Brokeback Mountain. For some naive reason, I thought that everyone read the short story before seeing the movie because it was out for so long. But I keep forgetting that not everyone likes to read. I should know better because a lot of porn stars told me this very thing- that reading is pointless. Since whenever the book is good enough, they will certainly make a movie out of it. So again, my apologies ...

Love,

Michael

Frustrating, ain't it?

I try to read as much as possible. I may not be straight, but gay men under 40 do look at me weird…

Michael,

Thank you for the apology. It is not that I do not read, which is not the case, it is just that I live in a small community where LGBT books are not plentiful, nor is Brokeback Mountain even showing in my town. Nevertheless, it is not just LGBT persons whom do not read, but it is most of young America.

Negating oneself the pleasures of reading is as ridiculous as remaining celibate.

Furthermore, a well-written book is like a workshop in which anybody who cares to can sharpen their mind.

Responsible citizens in a democracy work to improve the quality of their critical thinking. In a dumbed-down, anti-intellectual society like that of the present-day United States, it is possible for the illegitimately-installed Commander in Chief to advocate a constitutional amendment prohibiting gays from having their civil rights without there being a massive outcry from the voting population, which goes right on patting itself on its pimple-scarred back for its alleged embrace of liberty. Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada and Massachusetts all have higher literacy levels than that of heartland America. By contrast, there is not one country with lower literacy levels than the U.S. which accords greater rights to gays.

Upon seeing Marc's comment that "it is not just LGBT persons whom do not read" I nearly laughed until I puked. LGBT books may not be plentiful in his town but I will bet the complete works of Herman Melville that Amazon delivers there.

As my final salvo I'll point out that if a movie is of an artistic quality that merits its being seen in the first place, then it absolutely should not matter if one knows the outcome of the narrative. Do we not continue to attend performances of Hamlet even though we know how it ends? Do we not watch Dangerous Liaisons over and over again even though we realize what's going to happen when Michael Lucas walks into that art gallery?

I care less if you gave away the ending part -- but it is not still captioned. I refused to see it unless it is captioned.

And many gays get to see it and I can't.

It's not fair. People who whined should shut up.

OUCH!!!
That acrid post by Michael Lucas hit home. I probably should start trying read more! I have a bad habit of buying books then not reading them. I'd like to think that I am a reasonably intelligent person even though I never heard of Annie Proulx or the short story in question. (I did hear of Sissela Bok and read her Lying. I hope that makes up for my intellectual deficincy.) One could make the case that giving away the ending of a movie is just plain bad manners and reserve judgment on those one feels ought to have read the book. In all fairness to Michael, he did put a spoiler alert at the begining of the post where he discussed the movie, so folks can't say that they weren't warned.

I better start reading Camille Paglia's Break Blow Burn!

So what do you think of Andy Hunter appearing as a bareback top in an upcoming Treasure Island movie?
