Drugs Are Bad, mmkay?

I recently spoke against steroid use after Rod Roddick's death in my entry "Get the Message?". So just in case some of you still think that steroids are cool, I'd like to make one last plea. A very close friend of mine was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. He was a steriod user and is only 35 years old. I asked Dr. Frank Spinelli, a friend of mine and a renowned physician here in New York City, to give me the lowdown on roids. Once again, I urge you all- go to the gym and work hard at it. It simply isn't worth risking your life to get quick and cheap results.

From Dr. Frank Spinelli:
We live in a world that is consumed with looking younger and having the perfect body. The gay community is no stranger to this obsession. In the 1980's AIDS lent its fuel to the fire igniting an explosion of anabolic steroid use. For competitive and cosmetic purposes, steroids are illegal in the United States. That doesn't stop gay men from buying them illegally. Steroids do build lean body mass but they are not without their own unfortunate side effects.

1. There is a high incidence of cystic acne especially with high doses of testosterone. Areas most commonly affected are the face and back.

2. Gynecomastia is breast developement in males secondary to hormonal changes. The breast tissue can be cystic and permanent forcing men to turn to plastic surgery of treatment.

3. Anabolic steroids also increase lipid levels, raising cholesterol. This can promote coronary artery disease and stroke.

4. Another common side effect caused by hormonal changes is testicular atrophy or shrinking of the testes.

5. There is also the potential for enlargement of the prostate, a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Some believe that continued use of testosterone may lead to Prostate Cancer.

6. There are reported cases of Sleep Apnea, a sleep disorder, characterized by intense snoring followed by a short cessation in breathing.

7. Increases in Hemoglobin, a condition known as Polycythemia, increases blood viscosity leading to obstruction in the vessels supplying the heart and the brain.

8. Anabolic steroids especially the oral compounds, can cause an increase in liver enzymes. There are documented cases of fatal hepatotoxicity associated with anabolic steroids and concommitant use of alcohol.

9. Fluid retention or bloating.

10. Finally, behavioral changes are very common. Most men complain of wild mood swings and outbursts of anger. Depression and lethargy are common especially after steroid use has stopped.

All of the side effects of steroids happen AFTER you stop taking them. That is because while you are on steroids your body is becoming used to chemical testosterone and stops making natural testosterone.

When you stop your "cycle" your body isn't making ANY testosterone at all. This is bad and that is what causes a lot of side effects such as "bitch tits" "roid rage" and acne. The way that you can avoid this is by replacing the testosterone in your body for about a month.

There is a supplement sold at GNC called "Novodex XT" that will help replace testosterone in your body while it's recovering from the cycle. Also it is quite fine to do one or two cycles but don't spend years on it. Too much of anything is bad and the big and bulky look is just not sexy. Well for me anyway.

One other thing. There is a lot of shit out there. Fake steroids. They are bad and don't do anything. Actually they can give you all the side effects with none of the muscle benefit. It is very important that you buy ANY drug from someone that you absolutely trust. Preferably a good friend.

So how far do you take this? Are your actors and models tested for steroids?

Ah, Michael, you certainly are aggressively ignorant. Then again, perhaps you are simply mislead.

I find it odd that this "renown" HIV physician would condemn steroids, when so many thousands of HIV patients have benefitted from testosterone and growth hormone therapy combined with weight training and a proper diet. It has saved these patients from horrible disfigurement, depression, and death from HIV wasting syndrome as well as lipodystrophy. Perhaps the good doctor would care to comment on his omission of this fact. I have three gym clients for whom steroid/gh therapy has made all the difference in the world. Good thing they are not patients of Dr. Spinelli.

The list presented of all the supposed medical evils of steroid use are longstanding, but utterly without documentation. The reality is that there are many hundreds of thousands of steroid users in the United States, alone. Were steroid use so dangerous, there would be a clearly established epidemic of liver damage, coronary artery disease, and on and on, all due to steroid use. In fact, there is no such epidemic. The overwhelming vast majority of steroid users do so with absolutely no professional supervision. Yet, in spite of this, these steroid users live normal and healthy lives. Let's not forget that steroids have been in use, by athletes, since the 1950's. So, where is all this damage to health, and even death? Where is the documentation? Again, let's hear from the good doctor, where all these sick people are?

The cases of health damage derive from those individuals who have abused the drugs. You abuse any drug, you will damage your health. But you cannot rationally take the medical records of drug abusers and apply them to those users who are responsible and sane. To do so is nothing but fear-mongering.

It is the sane and responsible users who constitute the bulk of the steroid-using population.

Michael, if you want to get concerned over the hazards of drug use, please consider the health risk of over-the-counter Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs(NSAIDS). These NSAIDS include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Serious toxicity, leading to hospitalization or death from NSAID use, occurs for an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people per year. Moreover, it is estimated that approximately 10,000 to 20,000 deaths per year are related to NSAID use. The bulk of these deaths come from irreversible liver damage and fatal hemorrhaging from stomach ulcers induced by NSAIDS.

It is estimated that, each year, NSAIDS kill nearly as many people, in America, as AIDS.

How many times have you had a headache, or the flu, opened your medicine cabinet, and reached in for the bottle of "harmless" aspirin or ibuprofen? Did it ever occur to you what sort of risk you were taking?

Michael, please direct your focus to those who abuse drugs, and to those drugs whose records of health risk are clear and irrefutable. Fear-mongering, disinformation, and ignorance is something that nobody needs.

Steven, Dr. Spinelli simply mentioned that anabolic steroids are not for people without HIV. It should not be. But for them, it could help a little.

I should mention that Jose Canseco made it clear that the shrinking of the TESTES do occur, but it does not shrink the penis size. ;-)

Otherwise, Dr. Spinelli is hot.

I would never, ever take this drug...or any for that matter!

You know, people might be more likely to take medical advice from a doctor who doesn't have a 3/4 photo from GlamorShots...
