Why Can't Bush Be More Like Zapatero?

First it was Netherlands, then Belgium, now Spain. Ole’!
Today, the Spanish Parliament legalized gay marriage, becoming the third country in history to do so.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was quoted saying to the chamber, “We were not the first, but I am sure we will not be the last. After us will come many other countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality.''
Wow. Here, ladies and gentlemen, is a true statesman, not just a politician. Imagine Bush saying something as eloquent as that. Hmmm… Why Can’t Bush be more like Zapatero?
Why is it that a country so Catholic, so conservative, who had Franco in power until 1975 can do it, and we, the most powerful and supposedly enlightened country in the world, can’t?
I’m not a big believer in marriage. I think it’s a dated institution that hasn’t even worked for straight people (if the religious right had any brains, they would support gay marriage, how many married couples do you know still have sex?) It many not be my choice, I’m way to cynical for that kind of crap. But I do believe in the need to have a choice, for anyone who pays taxes.
It pains me to see, in a country I love so much, politicians, supported by the stupid masses, resisting this worldwide revolution, because in the end that’s what it is: an unstoppable force that no church and no bible-thumping lunatic can squelch. It happened with the Civil Rights Movement, it will happen again. When it does, I wonder what eloquent words Bush may have for the House. I really do.
Love,
Michael

Unless I'm out of my mind, Canada legalized it a few days ago, making Spain the 4th.

Actually Canada is the 3rd one legalized gay marriage. We did that last Tuesday! Go Canada! .. now Spain!

Because the United States is a big country.... You may have the east coast and the west coast with very strong opinions, but then there is everyone else in between. There are more people in between thand at the liberal coasts.
By the way, don't blame Bush. Did Clinton do anything for gay rights? He also was in was in office for 8 years and did n-o-t-h-i-n-g.

Spain's the fourth. Canada legalized it just a few days ago also.
Posted by: Jon at July 1, 2005 01:30 AM
Michael, this past Wednesday, the House of Commons in Canada passed lesgislation to legalize same sex marriage in Canada, so Spain is actually the 4th country to do so.
Posted by: Donald at July 1, 2005 08:05 AM
Wasn't Canada technically the 3rd country (just by a few days)?
Posted by: Tom at July 1, 2005 10:38 AM
spain is in fact the third country. canada's house of commons passed legislation Tuesday that would make gay marriage legal, but their senate has yet to pass it (which they're expected to do).

I think that describing Spain as a conservative country doesn't really do justice to the social advancements that the country has made in the past two decades, many of them also as a reaction to the decades of dictatorship they've endured. The fact that such a law has passed with minimal protest (mostly limited to the hardline right-wing) speaks for itself about the tolerance and open-mindedness of Spaniards, I think. The fact that their mainstream left-wing platform is actually doing left-wing policies and not the centrist or "right-wing lite" shit that's been common in the US surely helps. The question is not "why can't Bush be more like Zapatero?" but why can't the Democrats be more like him. Also, I don't understand in what way being a Catholic country is an impediment to such laws (Belgium is a Catholic country as well, for instance), if a country is socially backward there's no way such a law could pass, no matter if its inhabitants are mostly Protestant, Jewish or whatever.

Canada, as a country, is actually the fourth country to legalize same-sex marriage. Although bill C-38 (the same-sex marriage bill) passed the House of Commons it still needs to pass the Canadian Senate and then get royal assent by the Governor General before it becomes the law of the land. Expect this to be done by next week. However, since 2003 eight provinces and one territory have been issuing same-sex marriage licences due to court challenges within those jurisdictions. Once bill C-38 is passed, same-sex marriage will be legal in the remaining two provinces and two territories which have not had court challenges. Therefore: If you believe that 93% of Canadians having access to same-sex marriage is perfect, then Canada was the third country. If you are picky and waited until 100% of Canadians have access to same-sex marriage then Canada will be the fourth country.

This goes out to Jonny boy who said "At least gays can have pride festivles here without being harrassed..."
just wanted to mention that that's a big bunch of bullshit...do you not remember a teenage boy in Wyoming was tied to a truck and dragged to DEATH and NO BODY did a damn thing about it...as a matter of fact a minsiter mentioned how the kid was going to hell. JUST last week walking down the VILLAGE (which is supposed to be so gay friendly) i had two big guys yelling "FAGGOT" at me and then yelling "YOU take it up the ass, god damned faggot" and THEN saying "you better walk fast before someone knock you out pussy"...
Yeah, really safe to be "proud" in New Fucking York, eh? So no, we aren't still safe to be out in this country and not even in some areas of New York city, and yes i do still fear for my welbeing at times from Christians and homphobes alike.
