Barking Up the Wrong Tree

I was walking my dog this morning, a stunning Great Pyrenees with long white hair and a beautiful snout. She is cute, no question about it. Even if you hate dogs (what the hell is wrong with you?) you’d like Bianca.
In any case, as I was saying, I was walking her on 23rd Street and, as always, some woman walked by and gushed about how beautiful she was. Now, I appreciate the gesture, but at the moment I was on the phone, so I nodded politely, and kept on walking. The next thing I know, she’s shouting at me: “You’re welcome!” Um, okay.
What is it with people who think just because they compliment your dog, you’re somehow indebted to them?
I know to some this may sound petty, but if you own a dog, you know what I’m talking about. People come up to you and think they’re you’re best buddy – some sort of twisted license to chat. And whether you’re picking up crap, whether you’re mouth is full, whether you’re in a rush or simply in a bad mood, you’re still expected to chat up some idiot who has nothing better to do than talk about some stranger’s dog.
You know, at first I tried being nice (even though it’s completely against my religion). But it’s always the same tired questions: what kind of dog is this? Male or female? Why is she so big? (ha?) What’s her name? Isn’t she hot? (how the fuck should I know bitch?) where do you keep her? (Umm where do you think?) Do you have a big apartment? Does she eat a lot? Do you groom her every day? Can I pet her? Is she friendly? How old is she?
And on, and on, and on…Now if you’re stupid enough to answer all these questions, you could end up talking to some loser for a half an hour.
So my question, when is it polite to say, hey asshole, I got a job you know?
So if you ever see me walking a big white dog and I don’t stop to chat, don‘t take it personally, I’m simply ignoring you.
Love,
Michael

Oh my God, I love Pyrenees! They're just so huge and fluffy and cute. Bianca is one sexy bitch! I bet she's very popular at the dog park!

Oh Michael, you're so deliciously aloof and snobby. Seriously, you can't be for real. This is just your persona right? It's too campy to be real!

Totally agree Michael. Once, some classmates and a teacher said to me: "one of the best ways for get girls is when you are walking with your dog. They start chatting and you get them in your hand"...So stupid...and they really didn't know my taste...

OMG..I totally feel you on this! The same shit used to happen to me all the eime in Los Angeles when I would be out with my shih tzu's...now, I know she's gorgeous, but it does get old hearing a million people say it. Or they want to play with her and her sister..I mean, give me a break! I want them to pee and you are totally throwing them off! Great post!

I've seen Michael walking Bianca on 23rd Street. She is a beautiful dog, and as we all know, Michael is not hard to look at either!!!

Hey Lucas
please don't ignore them. You know you are a very attractive man(i know you know that already) but it's always good to be polite. i didn't like to watch porn movie before but one day my friend brought one of you movie and since then i'm addictited to your movies.Specially the audition's ones

If you were unaware that this is what happens when you own a dog in an urban enviroment you now know. I don't think a smile and a nod is such a horrible price to pay to get you through this ordeal. I respect your willingness to share with others unattractive parts of your personality but don't expect readers to agree with you because of this willingness.
What's the big deal? It would have cost you nothing to be pleasent. Get over yourself.

Damn, I was just about to buy a plane ticket to NY.
But! If I really were going to meet you both I promise to only cuddle up with you two and keep my mouth shut :)

Just say you're taking the dog back to its owner so you don't know much about it and are in a hurry :P.

hilarious! and this is true in so many other ways in life. on the one hand, it's nice that people *can be* friendly, take an interest in your dog (or whatever), etc. but to be SO clueless that there are *limits* ... and *signals* ... but mostly, i just like the idea of a cranky michael lucas! :)

Sorry Micheal but you sound pretty obnoxious

Michael,
If you don't want individuals stopping to talk to you, hire someone to walk your dog. Dogs like children speak to the innocence of humanity that resides in each of despite the effects of living in the fucked-up world of adults - who BTW caused all the "fucked-upness" in God's good world. Dogs and children are the catalysts that allow estranged human adults to reach out to each other and save our humanness. Love ya

If that woman was a man like Wilfried Knight, i think you wouldn't complain about it.
Not me :P

RUDE. In a world where people would just walk past you when you need help you can accept or understand the simple act of kindness? The English have a saying that says that you can't teach breeding. If someone takes the time to come up to you (and for once is not asking for money) and you can't acknowlegde their simple act of kindness than maybe you should get rid of your dog. In a world of people hating you for your religion, nationality, ethnicity (Russian Jew i think you refer to yourself) and sexuality if someone comes up to you and you can't be polite, in-kind than this speaks volumes about yourself. Any manners book would tell you that you do not have to make conversation but could acknowledge the compliment and move on. Celebrities and politicans do this all the time. As gay people we have to show the world that we are role models. This way people will come to accepts us rather than listen to the religious right and however we are procieved in the media. We gay people owe it to our community to take the high road. Rudeness is inexcusable. SHAME ON YOU.
